Confessions of a Reader

Confessions of a Reader 004: I have way too many unread books, and I still want more!

So, I know I’m not the only one. Here you are reading a book, minding your own business when you look up and notice your TBR shelf staring back at you. No, not just staring, but glaring at you, daring you to buy one more book before you finish reading all the unread books you already own. And for like maybe an hour or two you feel like you can exercise a little self control, you don’t add anymore books to your wishlist or to your shopping cart, you stop browsing Netgalley books to request but then you start scrolling, mmmhmmm, y’all know what I’m talking about, Instagram, Twitter, Booktube videos, pick your poison.

Don’t get me wrong. I absolutely love the online book community but I’d be lying if I said everyday that I’m scrolling through there I don’t see an additional ten books that I want to add to my TBR list.

I think to me it’s like booking a flight to my next vacation. Even though I might have 100 vacations ahead of me I still see another beautiful place that I HAVE to visit. This might mean that the book I bought won’t get touched for another year, BUT at least I know that at any moment I can visit that world when I need to. With everything going on in life right now I feel like as readers we are ALWAYS looking for an escape and to know that you have so many different places you can escape to depending on the mood you’re in is really comforting to me.

I don’t know. Maybe I’m looking at it too deep but if you ask me every time I purchase a new book I feel like I’ve discovered a new world and I’m holding a potential adventure in my hands.

Do you tend to buy more books even though you have tons of books at home you haven’t read? (Don’t be afraid to admit it, don’t leave me out here hanging by myself lol)

Do you have a process for which order you read your books in? I always say I should try to read the ones I’ve owned the longest but sometimes I just can’t resist starting the most recent book I’ve received!

  1. Yes! I agree with all of this! I own way too many books and don’t get around to reading them as quickly as I want to. But it really is that idea of having options. Just knowing that the book may be on my shelf for a few years, but that I have the potential to dive right into at at any time! I try to read books I’ve had the longest first but that doesn’t always end up happening. Haha!

  2. I tend to go to my library first. Last year i had soo many books and they were just collecting dust on the ground. I ended up donating over 100 books and my shelves thank me, haha. If I get tempted to buy a book, I usually read a million reviews to make sure it’s for me an if I’m still intrigued, I’ll add it to my online cart and then walk away for a few days. If I’m still thinking about it, I’ll buy it. So far I’ve been good this year. I think I’ve only bought 4 physical books. Most of my purchases have been kindle deals!
